Students are using technological tools at home for content, communication and collaboration. The integration of some of these tools could help the educational process. Skype and podcasts are tools that would enhance learning for a student that is unable to come to school. If a student is absent from school, the teacher could record the lesson and share it with the student using a podcast or in real time through Skype. Students that have missed school could also benefit from Blogs that the teacher could have made that included information for the student to complete at home. The Blog could also include the podcast and/or links to websites that would provide additional information for the student. The teacher could also have the student collaborate with the class using group twitter or Vyew. Vyew is a relatively new collaboration tool that incorporates webinars, online conferences, and real-time learning and instruction.

For group projects, the teacher could incorporate Wikis, smartphones and Facebook. Students could use these tools to communicate while at home over the weekend or in the evening. They could update each other about rescources they have found, materials they need, problems they may be having with the assignment, etc. The teacher could also post podcasts, additional resources, updates, etc. to these platforms.
Lately, I have been thinking about including Wikis in an upcoming class project. The project requires students to work in groups of four or five to prepare a math lesson on a topic that we have already covered. Each group is expected to make a power point presentation, a game, and a quiz on their math topic to present to the class. I usually have the students use the school’s network to work collaboratively. In the past, however, I have had the problem with other groups deleting or altering another group’s project. I figured, if I set up a Wiki for each group, they could collaborate without having to worry about anyone violating their project.
Technological tools have their place in the classroom to help students and teachers communicate, collaborate and find additional content to enhance the learning process. I would recommend all of the examples below to be incorporated into the educational process.
Sabrina, I like your suggestion for using Skype/podcasts to keep students up to date when they are absent. I had a student recently who missed a week of school due to an illness and could have really benefited from getting the instruction that she missed by actually viewing the lesson. I sometimes struggle with how to get students caught up by just giving them the work and not being able to teach the content, especially with my lower-level students. This is something that I would definitely consider using in my 2nd grade classroom to try and help students stay caught up. I think your idea for using wikis for the projects is great and should help you to avoid the troubles you've had in the past of student work getting deleted by other groups. Will you expect the other groups to view each other's work and how will you make sure that they can do so?
ReplyDeletePodcasts are very good audio supports for instruction. Vyew is a technology that I have not heard of, but would like become more familiar with its uses. Wikis are a wonderful and I have thoroughly enjoyed using in my course.
